Interaction with dogs: Acceptable. Buddy gets along well with other dogs and loves to
play with them! However, he does resource guard (toys and food)
when other dogs are present. He has made great strides on this
with his foster mom since being in foster care but he needs to either
be placed with no other dogs in the home or he should go to a
home with an experienced family that is comfortable handling
resource guarding and will continue to work with him using positive
reinforcement.
Interaction with cats: Not acceptable. Buddy currently lives with two other cats but will
chase them when given the opportunity so he should not be placed
in a home with cats or other small animals.
Interaction with children: Acceptable. Buddy gets along well with children that are able to
respect his boundaries - we would like to see him go to a home
with no children or children over age 10.
Activity Level: Moderate. Buddy is an adult dog - because of his breed, he needs one
walk per day to keep him mentally and physically stimulated. Like all labs,
however, he does love to play and will welcome the chance when you
engage him.
Leash manners: Acceptable. Buddy walks very nice on a leash with no pulling. Because
he can jump short fences, he will need to go to a home either with a tall
and secure fence or with no fence where he will be leash-walked only.
Housetraining: Fully housetrained.
Health status: Vaccinated, heartworm tested and treated, neutered, dewormed.
Major Personality Traits: Buddy is a well-mannered dog who will bond with you quickly - he
thrives on and enjoys interaction with all people.
Special Needs: Due to his resource guarding, Buddy needs to go to a home with either an
experienced family or with someone who has no other dogs but is willing to
learn positive reinforcement techniques to continue working with him on it.
Amount of additional training needed: Average. Familiar with basic commands,
housetrained, walks great on a leash. Buddy will
need continued positive reinforcement in regards
to his resource guarding to build trust with his new
family.
Minimum Adoption Requirements:
~ No children under age 10.
~ Either a tall, secure fence or a home with no fencing where he will only be leash-walked.
~ Previous dog-experience or a willingness to attend training classes to learn positive-reinforcement techniques.
A word from Buddy:
"Hi, I'm Buddy! I'm a male black lab mix. I have a white muzzle but don't let that fool you into thinking I'm old - it's just my coloring - the vet estimates that I'm only 2-3 years old. I was found as a stray in North Carolina where animal control picked me up and almost killed me in the gas chamber due to lack of space. Fortunately Thunder's Angels saw what a loving dog I was and they saved me! I'm now being fostered in the Philly suburbs while I await my forever home. I'm a very affectionate and happy dog and I have the most beautiful coat! My fur is silky smooth! I LOVE all people and get along with almost every dog I meet. I'm currently living with a cat too but I sometimes try to chase her so a home without cats or other very small animals is not recommended. I'm housetrained and learning basic commands (like 'sit' and 'stay') and leash manners. I don't like being crated so I'll do best with someone who will only use baby gates when I need to be confined -- this shouldn't be much of an issue though since I'm already housetrained. I'm neutered and up to date on vaccines. My foster mom says I'm the sweetest dog ever!
